December 16, 2004 - Sioux City, IA-The Sioux City Bandits of United Indoor Football are pleased to appoint Jose Jefferson as Head Coach for the 2005 season. Jefferson is a graduate of the University of South Dakota where he earned a scholarship in Track and Field. His coaching career started at Westside High School in Omaha in 1994, where he coached until 1998.
Jose got his first head coaching position in 1999 with the Lincoln Lightning of the Indoor Football League, finishing with a 10-5 record. In 2000, he coached the Lightning to a 12-4 record and a repeat of the IFL South Division Championship that earned him the Western Conference Coach of the Year. In 2001, the Lightning finished 8-8 in their first year of competition in Arena 2; in 2002, the team ceased operations with playing a game. The Lincoln team reorganized in 2002 as the Lincoln Capitols to play in the NIFL and finished with an 11-4 record, winning the Pacific North Division and earning Jefferson his second Coach of the Year Award.
Jose moved on to coach the Green Bay Blizzard of Arena 2 in the 2003 season. In 2004, he came back to Lincoln to coach the Capitols for six games. Jefferson has also coached at Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, NE and Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln. Jose replaces Interim Head Coach Ervin Bryson, who left in October to take the head coach position with the NIFL Expansion Daytona Beach franchise.
Rounding out the Bandits coaching staff for 2005 are Tom Luxford, Roger Jansen, and Stephan Pearson.
Tom Luxford is back for his second season with the Bandits. He will work with the defense. Tom is a graduate of Westmar College with a BA in PE, and recently completed his Masters in Administration from Wayne State College in Wayne, NE. Luxford started his football-coaching career as an assistant at Fremont High School in Fremont, NE in 1984. His first head-coaching job came in 1986 at Prague High School in Prague, NE. His two-year record was 14-4; the team finished as State Runner Up in 1986 and Tom was named Head Coach for the East Squad in the 1987 All-Star Game. In 1988, he was named head coach at Laurel-Concord in Laurel, NE where his career record was 79-59 in ten years. The Wayne Herald named him Coach of the Year six times, in 1989, ‘92,’93,’94,’95,and ’96. Luxford’s 1994 team was Nebraska C-2 State Runner Up; his 1994 and 1995 teams were NENAC Champions with an overall two-year record of 23-2. Tom is currently an Assistant Principal at North High School in Sioux City.
Stephan Pearson is a newcomer to indoor football but just completed his third year as an Assistant Coach for the Briar Cliff Chargers. Pearson graduated from Morningside College in 1992 with degrees in Mass Communications/Business and was a three-year starter at wide receiver after transferring for Chowan JC in North Carolina. Pearson will work on the offensive side of the ball for the Bandits. Stephan currently works for Juvenile Court Services Department of the Third Judicial District for the State of Iowa.
Roger Jansen will be back with the Bandits for his third tour of duty. Last season Jansen worked with the offensive line, special teams and defense. He will have those same responsibilities in 2005. Roger has been very successful as the head coach of Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City. He was named head coach at Heelan in 1997, took two years off in 1998 and came back in 2000 as head coach. In his head-coaching career at Heelan, the Crusaders have qualified for the Iowa 4A playoffs every year. His overall record is 51-12 in seven years. He started his coaching career at Heelan in 1981 as a Sophomore Coach. The Sioux City Journal named Jansen Coach of the Year in 2002.
