April 20, 2005 - Tupleo, MS - The Tupelo FireAnts (1-4) return to the BancorpSouth Center this Saturday, April 23, as they take on the visiting Fort Wayne Freedom (3-0) in the Hill starting at 7:30pm.
The ‘Ants come into this week’s game on a 1-game losing streak following a 36-20 loss to the Tennessee Valley Raptors (1-2) last Saturday night at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The FireAnts are being outscored by an average of 31 to 45 so far this season. Tupelo is averaging 146 yards passing and 72 yards rushing for a total of 218 yards of offense per game. The defense is averaging 155 yards passing and 85 yards rushing for an average of 240 yards allowed per game. A win for Tupelo could improve the FireAnts to third place in the UIF-South Division. After this week’s game, the FireAnts have a bye next week before returning home to battle the Tennessee Valley Raptors on Friday, May 6th at the BancorpSouth Center in Tupelo, Mississippi.
The FireAnts offense is led by quarterback Tommy Miller, who is first in UIF passing yards (783) and second in touchdowns (10). His main targets are wideouts Darryl Carter, Chris Rainey (12 receptions for 111 yards), and Jamie Armstrong (10 receptions for 123 yards). Carter leads the league in receiving yards (358) and receptions (28). The ground attack is lead by Rico McDonald, who is 4th in UIF scoring (48 points). The defensive line is anchored by Patrick Craig (17 tackles), Mancell Elam (4 tackles for a loss), and Reggie Smith (11.5 tackles). Linebacker Ricky Franklin leads United Indoor Football in tackles (32.5). Defensive back Tyson Patterson leads the league in interceptions (4) and is 5th in passes defended (6). Fellow DB Terrell Sutton is 3rd in UIF interceptions (3) and 6th in passes defended (5) Kicker John Michael Marlin is 5th in the league in points for a kicker (23). Bobby Hill leads the league in kick return yardage (461).
The Fort Wayne Freedom come into this week’s game on a 3-game winning streak following a 59-34 victory over the Black Hills Red Dogs (0-4) last Saturday in Fort Wayne. The Freedom are outscoring their opponents by an average of 40-26 so far this season. Fort Wayne is averaging 136 yards passing and 52 yards rushing for an average of 188 yards of offense per game. The defense has allowed 127 yards passing and a league-low 56 yards rushing for an average of 183 yards allowed per game this season.
