August 27, 2007 - Omaha, NE - Ben Sankey, quarterback for the Rock River Raptors, recently signed a free-agent contract with the Canadian Football League’s (CFL) British Columbia Lions.
Sankey, who led the Raptors to a 10-5 record and the Eastern Conference championship, completed 262 of 388 passes for 2,951 yards and 47 touchdowns. He also added 140 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. For his efforts, Sankey was named Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year.
"We are very excited to have Ben taking his talents to the next level," said Tom Crow, General Manager of the Rock River Raptors. "Ben has been working hard for two years to get his chance, after his disappointing injury last year; he came to us this year and played an amazing year ending with the MVP award of the league. We wish him the best."
The 29-year old native of Chicago, IL, is not new to the CFL as he previously played for the Calgary Stampeders and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. While at Calgary, Sankey played under Wally Buono, the current coach for the Lions.
The Lions, who sit in second place in the CFL’s West Division with a 5-2-1 record, were in need of a quarterback as the team’s top two quarterbacks went down with injuries. Sankey will be the third-string quarterback for the team when they host the Montreal Alouettes Friday at BC Place Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Pacific Time.
